The River Year: 2008 ~ 2018

Divided into four main chapters, a month-by-month account of a year on the river, based on observations and a diary, kept every day during 2008, and supplemented over the next ten years in greater detail.

Plants, birds, insects, animals, fish and many other species are revealed together with selected life cycles.

The spawning of the wild brown trout is explained, together with the life cycle of the upwing river flies upon which they, and other species, rely. Underwater cameras capture images of pike and spawning fish in their natural environment.

Over 70 species of bird are featured, including a black swan. The birdlife is tracked from the arrival in the spring of the cuckoos, reed warblers, sedge warblers and reed buntings to the departure of the swallows, swifts and housemartins in the autumn.

Otters, water voles and kingfishers are popular on the river scene.

Time-lapse comparative photographs show the transition of the river vegetation throughout the year in vivid detail.

The book will be available from February 2019 onwards.
